Site search for this site is provided by Google, a third-party full-text search engine for the World Wide Web.

How to Search with Google

Google site search follows the same basic rules as Google search of the whole World Wide Web. Type in your search terms and type the Enter key (or click on the Google Search button) to show the search results. Google only shows pages that include all of your search terms, so you never need to include "AND" between terms. If you want to make your search more specific, just include more terms.

Google does not support the logical "OR" operator; in other words, Google doesn't show you pages that include only a few of the search terms you enter. Google only shows pages that contain all the terms you ask for. Because Google does not support "OR" searches, there is no way to tell Google to show pages containing either term 1 or term 2. You can search twice, once with word 1 and once with word 2, if you don't find your desired page the first time.

Like all full-text search engines, Google ignores common words and characters known as "stop words." Google disregards such terms as "where" and "how," as well as certain single digits and single letters, because these terms rarely help narrow a search, and can slow down searching significantly. Use the "+" sign if you must include stop words in your search. Be sure to include a space before the "+" sign. You can also include the "+" sign in phrase searches.

Each Google search result contains one or more excerpts from the web page, which shows how your search terms are used in context on that page. Your search terms are shown in bold print so you can tell easily whether the page is one that will answer your question.

Google does not use "stemming" or support "wildcard" searches. Google searches for exactly the terms that you enter in the search box. Searching for "googl" or "googl*" will not yield "googler" or "googlin." If in doubt, try both forms: "home schooled" and "homeschooled" (my preferred spelling, because it eases computerized searching).

Google searches are not case sensitive. All letters, no matter how you type them, will be searches as lower case. For example, searches for "homeschooling college admission," "HOMESCHOOLING COLLEGE ADMISSION," and "hOmEsChOoLiNg CoLleGe AdMiSsIoN" will all show the same results.

Please Tell Me How Well This Site Search Works

I hope you find what you are looking for today. Please send me any comments you have about how to make this site more searchable and convenient. I have just begun using Google site search after earlier using Matt Wright's Simple Search program on this site. I am willing to change brands again to help you, the reader of this site, find what you are looking for. Please tell me about how well the search form works, how easy it is to find pages on this Learn in Freedom! TM site, and any other ideas you have for making this site better. Sometimes legend says that there are materials on this site that aren't here--yet. I'm interested in what you want to see on this site, so please let me know if you don't find it after searching here. I'm always interested in suggestions about what to add to the site in future revisions.

Please write with your comments, especially about how well the site search works here. I really appreciate your comments. All E-mail to the Web master [mailto link] with a valid return address receives an immediate, automated reply with answers to the questions readers have most frequently asked me about this site. Please note that my E-mail address in the link on this page is protected against robots collecting addresses for junk E-mailers by adding the characters "%20" before the actual E-mail address in all my E-mail links. You can simply remove those characters from the beginning of the address line on your E-mail program if they appear on the address line, to ensure you send E-mail to the real Web master address for this site. You can usually get fast and helpful answers to specific questions about education policy, homeschooling, or other issues brought up on this site from public discussion groups where many people participate, because "in multitude of counselors there is victory."
